Gastric Banding – A Revolutionary Step towards Staying Fit

History

Gastric banding surgery is done on obese patients for bringing in weight loss. After this surgery, the person feels fuller, his appetite reduces, and he eats less and thus loses weight. Laparoscopic gastric banding surgery is the most popular form of weight loss surgery after gastric bypass. It was in early 1985 that for the first time Dr. Dal Hallberg applied for the patent rights of the Swedish Adjustable Gastric Band-SAGB. During this time laparoscopic surgery was not common, and he went about performing this surgery through the open stomach procedure. From 1994 onwards, the gastric band surgery came to be implemented through the laparoscopic technique through the efforts of Dr.Forsell.

Procedure

With the help of laparoscopic equipment, the surgeon places a flexible band around the upper portion of the stomach. The stomach compressed and tightened by the silicon band takes the shape of a small pouch with an inch wide outlet. As a consequence, the stomach can hold only a small amount of food. A plastic tube connects the silicon band to a device under the skin. Sterile salt water is injected through the skin into the silicon band. The water can move into and out of the silicon band. This way, the band is made a flexible one. It can be tightened or loosened according to one’s need, and weight loss takes place with minimum side effects.

Advantages

The gastric banding surgery leads to significant weight loss of very obese individuals. Though results vary, on an average it can result to 40% weight loss. Since this surgery is done with minimum invasion, it is considered the safest. It is a reversible procedure, and the stomach can be returned to its former size, if desired. Another great advantage with the gastric banding procedure is that food absorption is not reduced. Thus, the body does not have to deal with loss of essential nutrients.

Post surgical care

Gastric banding surgery can involve certain side effects. Taking care of oneself after the surgery is performed is as important as the surgery itself. With proper care and attention you can eliminate the risks of band slippage, pain in the site where band has been inserted, and some digestion problems like nausea, gastroesophageal reflux and diarrhea. However, the percentage of these risks is very low compared to the physical and psychological benefits that the individual attains after the performance of gastric banding surgery. You can search the internet for information on clinics and bariatric surgeons offering their services. This will also give you comprehensive knowledge about obesity and surgical procedures to eliminate it.

Who needs a face lift?

A lady went to a plastic surgeon to see what he could do about a facelift.

The doctor said, “Well ma’am, we have a brand new procedure. We put a dial in the back of your head and when your skin starts to sag you simply turn the knob.”

“That sounds good,” she said.

Two years passed and she went back to tell the surgeon that the dial was giving her bags under her eyes.

“I’m sorry ma’am,” replied the surgeon, “but those aren’t bags – those are your ti ts!”

“Oh,” said the woman, “so that explains the goatee.”

There are millions of people all over the world who were either born with altered facial features or experienced an accident or disease that has changed their facial appearances. The most common of these facial abnormalities include broken facial bones, cleft lip, cleft palate, facial burns, birthmarks, deformed skull and many more. Since it cannot be denied that the face is one of the most visible and important part of the body, many people are finding ways to relieve themselves of these deformities.

To solve this problem, almost six million Americans have turned to facial reconstructive surgery. Facial reconstructive surgery is a kind of plastic surgery that is done to improve the appearance of facial defects and regain the functions of the affected facial features. Although this type of surgery is considered as plastic surgery and is done by cosmetic surgeons, it must not be confused with cosmetic surgery. Cosmetic surgery is performed to enhance the appearance of the face, while facial reconstructive surgery on the other hand, is primarily done to restore the function of the affected area.

There are several types of facial reconstructive surgeries and some of the most popular are cleft lip repair, rhinoplasty or corrective nose jobs, scar revision and face trauma reconstruction. The procedures used in each depend on the severity of the abnormality. For example, simple camouflage techniques can be used for normal scars. However, for deeper and more serious ones, doctors may perform multiple operations and replace dead tissues to achieve the desired outcome.

Even if facial reconstructive surgery is the only way to treat facial deformities caused by congenital problems or traumatic experiences, many are still hesitating to undergo such procedures for two reasons: fear and cost. Just like any other operations, it is just normal to be scared because of the risks and pain involved in this type of surgery. One way of reducing fear is by researching about the procedure and consulting the right cosmetic surgeon. A good surgeon will surely give proper advice and help the patient prepare for the operation. As for the cost, unlike cosmetic surgery, facial reconstructive surgery is usually covered by health insurance so it should not be a problem. And even if it was not, every single dollar paid would be worth it since these types of surgeries are done for the patient’s health and not just for aesthetic purposes.

How do you sue a plastic surgeon for very unsatisfied results?

I under went my third revision rhinoplasty with a Houston doctor who still managed to give me unsatisfied results!!

I am devastated with him…..I want to have another revison but with different plastic surgeon. I’m so unhappy about it..

In the meantime I just wanna get my money back somehow and suing sounds like the best thing to do. Please tell me how do I go about it the right way!!

Err…I would double check the papers you signed consenting to surgery.

After 2 prior rhinoplasties, I’m sure the surgeon was smart enough to point out all possible risks and then stated that your sig indicated you understood and accepted these risks.

It’s standard stuff.
